Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom Teeth
Removal

When a tooth is impacted, it means that there isn’t enough space for it to push through the gums normally. This may cause the tooth to emerge at an angle or in a misaligned fashion, or it may cause the tooth to become stuck, potentially leading to jaw pain or more serious conditions.

Teeth commonly affected by impacting are wisdom teeth and canines. Wisdom teeth are the rear-most teeth in your mouth, while canines are the teeth located between your incisors and canines.

When canine teeth are impacted, steps are taken to create space, such as braces or other corrective procedures, which allow them to lower correctly.

When wisdom teeth are impacted, your dental professional may recommend an extraction. This is often the best option for your overall oral health and appearance.

Your dental professional will discuss all of the options with you so that you can make the choice that’s right for you.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting can repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, gum disease, or injuries. The bone is either obtained from a tissue bank or your own bone is taken from the jaw, hip or tibia (below the knee). Sinus bone grafts are also performed to replace bone in the posterior upper jaw.

Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

Some patients require oral surgical procedures before receiving a partial or complete denture, in order to ensure the maximum level of comfort. A denture sits on the bone ridge, so it is very important that the bone is the proper shape and size. If a tooth needs to be extracted, the underlying bone might be left sharp and uneven. For the best fit of a denture, the bone might need to be smoothed out or reshaped. Occasionally, excess bone needs to be removed prior to denture insertion.

Anesthesia

Drug-induced loss of consciousness during which patients are not arousable, even by painful stimulation. The ability to independently maintain ventilatory function is often impaired. Patients often require assistance in maintaining a patent airway, and positive pressure ventilation may be required because of depressed spontaneous ventilation or drug-induced depression of neuromuscular function. Cardiovascular function may be impaired.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

An impacted tooth simply means that it is stuck and cannot erupt into function. Patients frequently develop problems with impacted third molar (wisdom) teeth. These teeth get stuck in the back of the jaw and can develop painful infections among a host of other problems. Since there is rarely a functional need for wisdom teeth, they are usually extracted if they develop problems.

Facial Trauma

There are a number of possible causes of facial trauma such as motor vehicle accidents, accidental falls, sports injuries, and work-related injuries. Types of facial injuries can range from injuries of teeth to extremely severe injuries of the skin and bones of the face.

Oral Pathology

The inside of the mouth is normally lined with a special type of skin (mucosa) that is smooth and coral pink in color. Any alteration in this appearance could be a warning sign of a pathological process. The most serious of these is oral cancer.

An apicoectomy, also known as root-end surgery, is a minor surgical procedure performed when a root canal alone isn't sufficient to eliminate infection at the tip of a tooth's root. During the procedure, an endodontist removes the infected tissue and the root tip, then seals the area to prevent further issues, aiming to preserve your natural tooth and avoid extraction.

At Metro Oral, oral biopsies are performed to diagnose abnormalities in the mouth, such as persistent sores or unusual tissue changes. This procedure helps ensure early detection and treatment of potential oral health issues, including oral cancer.
